Orange Cake with a spicy twist

Oranges are awesome. They're tangy, sweet, packed with vitamin C, and ah yes not that expensive :) Also Oranges dont go bad soon. Which is why I bought a whole 2kg bag of yummy Oranges the other day. So today, I decided to make a juicy Orange cake. There are hundreds of Orange cake recipes on the internet, and I followed this one here . I did make some changes though: I added only about 100g butter instead of the 125g since someone had commented the cake was a little heavy, and I needed a light airy one. And I added a spicy twist by adding some freshly grounded cinnomen and nutmeg (warning : too much of nutmeg will make you tipsy) Plus, I used a little more Orange zest and juice than is called for in the recipe. And... the reuslt is: A lovely golden Orange cake baked just right :) Instead of icing, I punctured the cake while still warm and poured Orange syrup all over it. Let it soak in for a few minutes, and enjoy with some hot tea, or with a dollop of whipped crea...

Bluetooth support on Android Emulator

I have been playing around with Android lately, and one thing that annoyed me is the emulator does not support Bluetooth (as opposed to J2ME emulator, which does). So if you do not have an actual Android device (like me), and you want to do Bluetooth/WiFi programming, you run in to a problem. Fortunately, there is a way out - Install the Android image on a VM and use your own Bluetooth device. This is what I did: Download Androidx86 from http://www.android-x86.org/ . This is an .iso file, so you'd need something like VMWare or VirtualBox to run it. Me, I use VirtualBox. When creating the virtual machine, you need to set the type of guest OS as Linux instead of Other. After creating the virtual machine, set the network adapter to 'Bridged'. Start the VM and select 'Live CD VESA' at boot. Now you need to find out the ip of this VM. Go to terminal in VM (use Alt+F1 & Alt+F7 to toggle) and use the netcfg command to find this. Now you need open a command...

The good advice I just didn't take

I wish I'd listened when they told me that I shouldn't wear my heart on my sleeve...

Why am I doing a Phd?

This is a question that many people ask me. And one that I ask myself, in those wee hours of the morning when I am trying to finish writing a paper before a deadline. (I'm sure you're wondering what the Heath Photos at the top has got to do with any of this. No I'm not a crazy fan. Well. I am. Just not crazy. not that much. Anyway I'll get to that at the end) I know that some people do a PhD just for the sake of doing it - as in a pay raise or a promotion in the academical career. But in my case I did not even have an academical career, being employed in the industry for more than 2 years before I started on my doctorate. So why? Well, I got bored in the industry. And I wanted to do research. To have a career as a 'Researcher', you need to prove to your prospective employers that: a) you are capable of spending months tackling an interesting yet difficult problem b) you have patience and perseverance to learn from failures c) you're di...
