Does any one know how many soaps are run on Lankan TV these days? And its not just TV, they're on radio as well...The thing is most of them are really stupid! Granted, soaps do not have to be based on 'Booker prize' scripts, but PUH LEEEEZE the plots these people come up with!!
Just tune in to Swarnavahini's Gauthami or Sirasa's Kavya to get my point *rolls eyes*
Why do these ppl have to copy-cat indian soaps?? Its not just the plots either! Why on earth is Vasuda (in Vasuda at Sirasa) wearing a mangala sutra ??? Hellooo Sirasa ! Get a reality check NOW! Since when did Sinhalese women weart those? And the garish make up plus the gaudy makeup these women seem to be smearing themselves with...!
I personally have never met anyone who waers saris at home...My mother tells me that her mother, my grandmother wore saris at home ages ago... But the women in these soaps are wearing all these heavy gaudy saris at home all the time???

The recipe for a Lankan Soap:
- A heroine who will be the main character : She is
- Very pretty - but only in a good-girl kind of way
- Very innocent
- Very brave
- Very rich - or will get rich soon
- A guy magnet - not that she is remotely interested in anyone but her 'true love'
- Some guy to play the heroine's true love : He is
- Also rich
- Gullible (so that will misunderstand the heroine alot)
- a girl magnet so that the heroine will always have to 'fight for love'
- Some deep dark family secret : for example,
- Heroine's mom is actually her step mom but no one knows this except an estranged uncle
- Heroine's dad/mom has illegitimate offspring
- Heroine's dad/mom has secretly morgaged/sold their entire fortune and the heroine finds this out on the day of her wedding
- The guy to whom their property was morgaged/sold lusts for the heroine and now she has to marry HIM to save her family
Sis, you've got it dead right. I've been fighting a lone war against the lame soaps of not only sirasa but on all the TV channels in srilanka now and you might find a great number of posts in my blog about these. Nowadays, srilankan TV channels simply sucks. That's all it is. I've basically given up watching television unless it is a cricket match. I think people still don't realize the potential threat posed by Sirasa and other media channels. You have to watch Sirasa to see how stupid the majority of this country is. I don't mean to be disrespectful but it is the reality.
ReplyDeleteBTW, i've added something more in my blog on "varsity suckers". You might wanna check that out too.
Good luck on your studies and your blogging:)
(You might wanna enable the facility to comment under different names or else my comments will appear under the name "niro" as well. Sorry, i had no other option)
yep! i only watch x-files re runs..even jeevithaya lassanai is a bit of a comical pain now.
ReplyDeletehaha akki i loved this!! - i'll try to keep all this stuff out of our soap!! haha
ReplyDeleteluv u lots!!
It is a difficult one.I don't have a tv as I don't have electricity.I go to a neighbours to watch an occasional cricket match. All my neighbours have TVs and they are glued to them all evening. It is entertainment for them.
ReplyDeleteI would prefer one with local realism, but like in India some of our people like to view a lifestyle they like to emulate, much like the Indians hooked to Bollywood type programs.
Maybe my kind of soap will not attract an audience and therefore get killed, and maybe not. We don't have public TV, even Rupavahini has to have ads to get revenue and advertisers will not advertise in programs they don't consider popular even though they are more informative, educational and more relevant to our society.
